Progressive Black Metal

About the Genre

Progressive Black Metal is a subgenre of Black Metal that combines the raw aggression of traditional Black Metal with the complex structures and technical proficiency of Progressive Metal. The genre emerged in the mid-1990s and has since gained a dedicated following among fans of extreme and progressive music. Progressive Black Metal bands typically incorporate elements of other genres, such as jazz, Avantgarde, and post-rock, into their music, resulting in a sound that is both challenging and innovative.

The music often features extended compositions with intricate instrumental passages, unconventional time signatures, and a wide range of dynamics. Lyrically, these bands often explore philosophical and existential themes, as well as social and political issues. Some of the most notable bands in the genre include Enslaved, Opeth, and Ihsahn.
