## Introduction

Back with their third full-length album, the German band Boötes Void, breaks their silence after three years of no releases, with melodies, ambiences, aggression, and a far more refined sound.

## Panta Rhei (Everything Flows)

*Track list:*

1. *Crown of Vermin*
2. *Shapers of the End*
3. *Nihil*
4. *Onwards to Our Death*
5. *Lost in Oblivion*
6. *Nebula*
7. *Panta Rhei*
8. *Requiem*

*Crown of Vermin* starts with a small clean intro that leads into a wall of sound, with everything being thrown at you. The vocals are powerful, with an interesting range from Boötes (vocals) with both deeper growls and higher shrieks, while the guitars alternate between creating this almost sci-fi sort of background for the vocal aggression to melodies and even a very catchy chorus riff, which is complemented by the competent drumming by Sagittarius. The song explores the melodic/atmospheric aspects of black metal in a very interesting way, and as it ends, the next song *Shapers of the End* starts in a very seamless way. Once again, quick intro, one that feels more sci-fi this time, into a wall of sound. The ambiences here are more prominent, and the vocals, which are double-tracked a lot of the time, are drenched in conflicting emotions. Following the previous song structure, this one also has a purely atmospheric part that blends in with some raw aggression to end the song.

*Nihil*, the next song, is more “pure melodic black metal”, and the base here is just so good all throughout the song. The instrumental break was a very welcome surprise, and I know I mentioned this a couple times now but I love it when I can hear the bass in black metal albums. Cygnus, Corvus and Draktar all do a very good job with the instrumental parts. Continuing on the aggression, *Onwards to Our Death* begins with some dissonant chords, some more primitive drumming to then speed up. The chorus here feels grim, dark and heavy on vocals but with hopeful ambiences and melodies, an interesting musical dichotomy.

Once the aggression ceases, we’re moved into yet another calm, almost stargazing-like experience, as *Lost in Oblivion* starts. This song goes more into the melodic territory, with guitars that at times compose a grand background, and at times take the spotlight with melodies or clean and sounding alone. It’s a longer song, with interesting composition choices that at times, feel almost like a classical composition with distorted instruments. As it ends, *Nebula* starts. It felt to me almost as if *Nebula* was once part of the previous song, but got cut into two different songs. The feeling is similar, spacey, big soundscapes built by the guitars and ambiences, but this time with more bite, more hate. Vocals here sounded almost like a lost transmission, grainy, with a little more reverb to them, which I found an awesome choice. The traditional black metal riffs are here too, giving that “oh that sounded great” type of feeling. This song ended up being my favourite of the album.

Then we get to the title track, *Panta Rhei,* with guest vocals from Lukas, the man behind the one-man band Ellende. The song gives some dissonance, aggression with some underlying hope on the ambience that drives the song forward in a very interesting way, paired with Lukas’ guest vocals. The song goes “up and down”, from hopeful to a darker feeling, even when the song goes into a break, with an almost uplifting feeling to the instruments but vocals filled with desperation, with hopelessness, again an interesting composition choice, as is the faster drumming near the end, gives a sense of conclusion to the song. Also there’s some unexpected sounds of birds chirping.

The last song, *Requiem*, is purely instrumental, a beautiful composition that builds up from the sound of rainfall, with some great instrumentation and a sort of, again, sci-fi sort of synth effect that gives this a very unique feeling.

## Conclusion:

I’m not familiar with all the work from the band, and this album sure was a great introduction.

It’s a competent, interesting album with some really interesting choices for compositions, an interesting mix of melodic and atmospheric black metal.

BZM Rating: 7.5/10
