The Demo:
Its chaotic in all the right ways. Apophany comes out swinging for their demo and they don't let up for any of its 3 tracks. I wouldn't say that this is traditional black metal as it lacks many of those hallmarks, but in its spirit and essence it is definitely black metal at the foundation. Apophany straddles a line between chaos and melody that most bands within the genre either overdue or fail to miss the mark. At times bordering almost into the genre of "noise", but still refined enough in its purpose that it avoids spiraling out of control into that territory.
The production is crisp and clean. Vocals are performed in an almost shrieked rasp that is reminiscent of DSBM, but maintain enough clarity to be audible in the mix. The drums are spastic and wild but suit the bands needs. The guitars in my opinion carry the bands weight. Balancing melodic passages, with more caustic sections that when fused together with the whole create a schizophrenic tapestry of unrelenting black metal.
Conclusion:
The demo is short, sweet and to the point. Delivering the bands essence in 3 tracks, defining a foundation that will hopefully grow into a full-length release sometime in the near future. If you're looking for something off the beaten path, or just enjoy the more obscure, fringe elements withing black metal Apophany will definitely resonate with you.
