The wailing, the alcohol, the drugs, the violence. Yep I’m back in Glasgow for another gig. This time for a touch of the Georgian depressive suicidal black metal band Psychonaut 4. The weather has become colder, a storm has hit this week, the days are getting darker and darker – what a fitting show for kicking off October.

Dreich

What can I say that hasn’t already been said in my previous review of their live show? This is the third time I’ve seen them this year (soon to be four) and they’ve really nailed their set and performance. A minor hitch with an amp at the start beyond their control which was quickly fixed didn’t put them off their game and they performed their cold and miserable performance to antithetically warm up the crowd.

Sadly their lead singer Nemus did slightly mess up as he went to do his traditional finale to their show where he throws a noose into the crowd, catching some staging as it pitifully fell down right in front of him. Perhaps the woefulness of that was fitting for their music.

Wolvesrot

Second time in a week I’ve seen them after their wonderful performance at Fogharach Festival the weekend prior, and the third time I’ve seen them this year (see also my review of them supporting Ante-Inferno / Ultha).

The local four piece played an absolutely solid show as they rattled through their set sounding fantastic with fast-paced black metal energy. I’ve been assured new material will be released and available at some point in the future and just slightly delayed due to personal lives.

Psychonaut 4

A beautifully depressive set that left me with feelings of bittersweet joy by its conclusion. Their live singer Irakli Kirkitadze who has been performing with them since 2024 since stepping in for Graf put so much raw emotion into each word that left his mouth as he sang and screamed these hopeless expressions. The guitars were beautifully played, from the more traditional Georgian style elements in their later stuff to the harmonising solos and bleak riffs.

The setlist was a mix of songs from throughout their discography, with some tracks off their latest album…Of Mourning (released nearly a year ago now) such as Fiqrebi Mtsukhrisa and Vai Me as well as the hits they’re known for like Sweet Decadence, Personal Forest, We Will Never Find a Cure and of course Too Late to Call an Ambulance which I think was the first song of theirs that made me familiar with them.

I picked up …Of Mourning on vinyl from the merch stand and got it signed by the five of them, and caught up chatting with familiar faces from the Glasgow scene before leaving to catch my train and reflect on a morose and sullen evening as I headed home.
