Introduction

A new contender in the realm of atmospheric black metal solo projects arrived to the scene late February 2026. Wilhelm Osoba hails from southern France and is experienced in solo music creation with his other project Trimarkisia, a melodic black/doom band that released an EP around the same time last year.

So let’s see how his first foray into a black metal style that generally requires more grandeur and an emotional experience goes.

Mossystone

Tracklisting:

  1. Unfulfilled Desire
  2. The Passenger
  3. Silence of the Void

No hesitation or buildup for this debut as we are thrown right into the midst of blastbeats and malicious screams, Unfulfilled Desire is an intense force of destruction. The pace does not let up until the calming outro of reverberated clean guitar notes gently bringing our first track to a close, sharply contrasted with the furious introduction of the second track The Passenger.

Introspective lyrics appear to call critique upon social conditioning and identity, as well as some existential reflection on our place in the universe. The sort of stuff you may lay awake at night thinking about, or as you gaze up at the stars on a clear night and think about our true insignificance amongst the cosmos. It’s dour, but with a slight hint of optimism that things can improve - a good mindset to have in our world.

The serene artwork also reflects this, Solitude by Jean-Baptiste-Camille Corot (1796-1875), this tranquil piece perfectly coheres to the poetic nature of these meandering compositions of pure atmosphere.

The guitars throughout this EP are slightly buried in the mix with the drums overpowering them, but the synths are wonderfully bombastic when they come in such as on The Passenger and have such a great presence in the mix. The vocals remain sharp and clear with their bitter tones growling through the barrage of bleak black metal.

Overall it seems incredibly well mixed and though the three tracks are a pure sonic assault of aggressive intensity it is polished enough that keeps every element powerful and well defined.

Silence of the Void is our final track which unfolds with a less hurried pace, with beautiful layered guitar work and underlying synth work that broods an immersive atmosphere. The whole piece swells with contrasting tempos, sweeping melodies and creates such interwoven textures. It probably is my favourite off the EP and a perfect way to conclude this debut journey.

Conclusion

Just shy of 25 minutes, this compelling debut EP gives you a strong sense of potential, with hopefully greater things to come in the future. It’s always a delight to hear new material in the atmospheric black metal world, a genre that manages to emotionally grab me and demand my full attention, and Mossystone has proved promising of that. May we hear more from this tantalizing project in the future.
