Band: Depressive Witches
Album: Lost, Forgotten and Heartbroken
Genre: Black 'N Roll
Country: France
Label: Unsigned/independent
Released: May 10, 2024

Introduction
Depressive Witches, well, are depressive, hence the title, you wouldn't think that they are very productive while being depressed, but they sure are. These witches are very, very productive. This is their third full album in 3 years (Bad Flask in 2021, Distant Kingdoms in 2022). When we count the live album as well, that would be 4 albums in 3 years. In my book, that is pretty productive.
The first album got me hooked instantly to the band. The black 'n roll music is just a fun subgenre. It's serious but not serious and like Heath Ledger said (as the Joker), why so serious? Well, he is right, after 30 years of black metal I have seen a few things and some folks take it all far too serious. But that, of course, is my opinion, so don't get your panties in a bunch if you have a different opinion.
So brothers Torvuus and Sick Bab know how to make a fun album, but the question is of course, can they keep up the level they achieved on the previous 2 albums?
Lost, Forgotten and Heartbroken
So when a third album is released, you have certain expectations because well after 2 you know what you should get when a band releases a third one. That is also the case with the third album of Depressive Witches. From the moment you turn this on, you get a sense of familiarity, and you just know that this record is made by Depressive Witches. Is that a bad thing? Absolutely not, it mostly means that they know what they are doing and found a certain flow, and that is never a bad thing.
Protected by Death and Sorcery, the first song of the album, starts off with a black metal sound, with some nice riffs, drums, and vocals to match. From the second half of that song, the 'n roll influences take over, and there is a more melodic part of the song. This sound continues in the second song, All my Girlfriends are Dead. It's all just very energetic, and it just keeps going, and you just know when you hear the vocalist screaming all my girlfriends are dead, that this will be sung along when they play it live.
Tracklist:
- Protected by Death and Sorcery
- All My Girlfriends Are Dead
- Wasted Witch
- Controversial Rock'n'Roll
- Lost, Forgotten and Heartbroken
- Dance of the Witch
- Alcoholic Forest
- All for the King
- Far Away

The fourth song, Controversial Rock'n'Roll starts off with a very familiar riff, and that's because it's a variant on the opening of AC/DC's Dirty Deeds Done Dirt Cheap, but it fits the song very well. I, of course, could be wrong, but played both songs at the same times, and it's very similar, so I'm pretty sure. One other song I really liked is Dance of the Witch, it's very rock 'n roll, and it's just a fun song to listen to (but that goes for all the songs to be honest).
I won't explore and detail all the songs because I believe music is a journey you must undergo yourself. You can read all you want about it, but we give a guide to what we like. In the end, you need to make that judgement for yourself, of course.
What I do like to mention is the album artwork of the album, it looks wonderful. I couldn't find how made it, but kudos to him/her, though! So now you know what I think of the album, it's time for the….
Conclusion
Within this subgenre, Depressive Witches are one of the best, in my opinion, and they prove that again with their third solid album. If you love some good riffs, nice drumming and just a fun record. Give this a try (and their previous records, you can read our review of Distant Kingdoms here) i'm sure you'll have a good time with it.
