Introduction

Gyves is an atmospheric black metal project hailing from Åtvidaberg, Sweden. Conceived in 2023 by multi-instrumentalist and sole member Loke, Gyves is set to release its debut full-length album upon the black metal legions.

My Death Sentiment

Tracklist:

  1. Intro: The Path Finally Appears
  2. The Forest Where Ancient Souls Whisper
  3. At Dawn I Now Wander
  4. The Night Over Desolated Ruins
  5. The Primordial Sage of Death
  6. Ominous Portal in the Redskyed Forest
  7. A Wizards Dreams and Wisdom
  8. My Death Sentiment
  9. Our Last Journey Begins with the Key in My Hand

The album opens with the aptly titled track, The Path Finally Appears, a beautifully written piano piece that sets the stage for the proceedings. It's an impressive composition and showcases Loke's songwriting abilities.

Beguiling the intro, the tracks to follow, while melodic, are also aggressive and heavy. Weaving layers of catchy tremolo picked riffs and growled vocals into a tapestry of well crafted atmospheres.

My Death Sentiment boasts an impressive amount of variety within the songs themselves, all the while maintaining a cohesive structure to the album itself as a whole. Layering passages of acoustic guitar, piano and even some spoken word amidst the melodic guitar riffs that Sweden is so well known for in its metal.

There are moments such as the ending of At Dawn I Now Wander that almost have a dungeon synth feel to it. But all the while never losing sight of the fact that at its core this is atmospheric black metal at its finest.

Ominous Portal in the Redskyed Forest, quite possibly my favorite track on the album, opens with another beautiful piano piece that flourishes into an exquisite instrumental.

Throughout the album, it's quite clear that Loke is an accomplished pianist. As well as being an apt musician with an ear for melodies. The piano however I think really shines throughout the album. However subtle it may sometimes be, it brings a level of maturity, elegance and depth to the songs that leaves one craving more.

Conclusion

The album bares heart and ambition. It's an undertaking of love and passion for the genre itself. Crafted with the utmost care. A melodic, riff-laden, love letter to black metal. The album's nine compositions are extremely well written. Not something one would expect from a debut album, and I am looking forward to hearing future releases. Fans of Dimmu Borgir and Emperor will find themselves at home here as well as anyone that appreciates Sweden's knack for melodic metal.
