Introduction

Ingwald is a solo atmospheric black metal band from Russia. Forged in 2024 and helmed by Waldsarg, the band has brought forth its first offering to the altar of black metal.

The Album

Tracklist:

  1. Intro
  2. Daggry
  3. The Struggle
  4. Nordland
  5. Spell of Destruction (Burzum Cover)

Ingwald is Second Wave worship at its finest. The album has taken all the classic elements of those early days and refined them into something equally aggressive, raw and cold as one would expect, all the while applying a slightly more modern approach to the production. It still has retained that icy atmosphere to it without sounding like it was recorded using a toaster. It evokes the essence of Scandinavian black metal with its melodic depth and atmosphere. The album also features some passages of clean vocals and synths. Waldsarg has skilfully woven these elements into a tapestry of well crafted black metal. The intro track is an acoustic piece that is quite beautiful. While the last track on the album is a Burzum cover. The cover stays true to the original’s haunting atmosphere. While adding a certain uniqueness to its form with the shrieked vocals that are in a way very reminiscent of Varg’s own style. The production is flawless and as a Burzum fan myself, it’s quite a good cover.

Conclusion

It’s raw, it’s dark and it’s atmospheric. It’s a love letter to the second wave of Scandinavian black metal. Plain and simple. The production is a step up from the early days and makes for a much more enjoyable listening experience overall. Fans of Burzum will certainly enjoy Ingwald, and I look forward to hearing what they have to offer in the future.
