Introduction
We all love a mystery that’s just a fact (well, I think it’s a fact). Karpathia is one of said mysteries. There isn’t much known about the band itself, so no names of musicians, no country. Nothing at all, it does add a mysterious note to a release of an album.
This album, according to MA, is their first album, it was released at the end of 2024, but a while a back we got a request for a review. So after a few listening sessions, I was ready for dotting down my thoughts.
Carpathian Hunger
Track list:
- Karpathia
- For the Frozen Pines
- The Holocaust of Endless Night
- Beneath a Foul Moon
- Carpathian Hunger
- Flowers in a Tomb
- The Black Flame (Instrumental)
- Purified by Fire
The album starts off with easy with a nice riff and continues to swell, and I’ve said it many times before, I like it when black metal vocals are full of agony and pain and have an icy vibe to them. And that’s just how the vocals of this artist sound. The title song of the album feels like a build up.
My favorite track of the album is the title song and the fifth track of the album, Carpathian Forest. The song has that same buildup and that icy and soul piercing scream at the beginning sounds great. The song itself is fast enough and there are some nice riffs to be found.
Another thing this album has in spades is atmosphere. The folk melodies used throughout the album are great, and that also goes for the 7th track on the album, The Black Flame, which is entirely instrumental. That track, and it’s atmosphere, complement the entire album great, it’s an island of tranquility in a sea of madness.
And a sea of madness that it is, that entire vibe is woven throughout the entire album, and it’s one of the highlights for me, it has it’s quiet sections and sections filled with agony, and it’s a good blend.
Conclusion
That draws us near to the conclusion and our rating, from whom would this be a great album? Well, for everyone who likes their black metal full of atmosphere and some great vocals. Not mentioned before, but certainly the case, this album also has a certain doom metal atmosphere, so for those that like that kind of style, give this album a spin.
BMZ Rating: 7 – Good: A solid and enjoyable album overall. It boasts strong songwriting and performance quality, delivering a cohesive and satisfying listen.
