Rumination
For this latest EP, the man with many projects, Noxathra, offers up a slice of pure evil across 3 tracks running under 20 minutes.
In terms of the technical side, it’s all there. The riffs are on point. The vocals are fucked. The drums have this shitty, demented feel to them (think Ildjarn) that I love. All 3 tracks are solid and expand on the previous cool shit from last year’s LP, Grimoire Tenebrarum. I think I’d say the production on this EP is more my cup of tea over last year’s LP as well; it’s clearer but weirdly more messed up.
As an aside, I’m writing this review at 1 am, and I can tell you now that is the optimal time for shit like this. When you’re as far away from everyone and everything as possible and can just be alone in your own head. This type of black metal is so deeply lonely and misanthropic that it’s impossible for me not to love it. The comfort that comes from just sitting in the dark with this music is difficult to explain.
Everything I love about one-guy-at-home black metal is on this album. I will always gravitate more towards this than any band-style black metal. It’s just cold, isolated, and miserable. This release nails that vibe in a way that I haven’t heard done so effectively in a while.
Conclusion
This latest EP offering from Nightwalker is honestly cementing them as one of the better black metal bands of the last few years. If you enjoyed their album from last year, you’ll enjoy this.
