Ofermod needs no introduction when it comes to delivering their brand of occult blackened death metal to the masses with their sixth release, Drakosophia. The album is charged with spellbound chants, hypnotic riffs, and blistering blast beats and drum fills that would make anyone feel like they are caught in a trance and consumed by their chanting spells.
I was happy that the production in the album was clear, and all the guitar and bass tones were properly heard complimentary to the driving of the drum patterns. Songs like Aicha Kandisha, Malat Atat, Nox Draconis and The Painful Movers showcase where the musicality of all those instruments are in par with one another. Hints of eerie atmospheric symphonics gives a lurking presence throughout the title track, Drakosophia giving the listener an eerie feel of spells conjured in the background waiting to infiltrate their soul with demonic possession. Adeptus delivers his cadences impactfully telling stories of conjuration and the want of being in power of each song capturing the listener with his every word.
Do you like chanting? The chants on this album compliment the stories told in each song. Along with the hypnotic riffs played about, they help deliver the message of those spells cast, such as Belialistic Gra’al Codex towards the end of the song uses vocal effects casting those eerie spells to give full effect of this experience. The chants really give a nice ambiance, impacting the soundscape with magic, sorcery, and impending doom.
Conclusion
Drakosophia has everything you wanted out of Ofermød and more. It seems that the only way they can go from here, is forward with more intensifying spell chants, crazy & catchy hypnotic riffs, and abrasive blasts & fills to conquer the listener’s soul. I cannot wait to hear what their seventh release has to offer to the masses in the future!
BMZ Rating: 8 out of 10
