There is something about Symphonic/Melodic Black Metal that I absolutely love. It takes me back to my teenage years when I didn’t have shit else to do but listen to music and all those discoveries I made back then and the bands that have stuck with me. Fast forward 20 plus years and here I am still finding those hidden gems, constantly seeking out that next band or album.
Occasionally striking gold like Obsidian Flame of Thy Offering.
This absolutely does not sound like a debut album at all. The song writing, lyrics, production and musicianship is insanely well done. Even the album artwork and logo are awesome. I’d expect this level of craft from a band far more established than this.
Every track on Obsidian Flame is flawless. The album flows beautifully throughout each of its 6 tracks and offers a very cohesive listen. Masterfully blending symphonic, melodic, and atmospheric elements with acoustic melodies, and theatrical spoken word passages to create something unique and interesting.
The guitar work here was especially captivating to me. Riffs upon glorious riffs that had me hooked. It has it all, beautiful cleans, soaring solos, melodic tremolo-picked passages, and chunky, chug laden groove.
Ravenous Flock is probably my favorite track off the album, simply because it had me hooked from the first riff and set my expectations. That being said every track here is incredible and the album as a whole is well worth the listen.
To put it simply; Obsidian Flame of Thy Offering boasts some of the absolute finest modern black metal I’ve heard this year. I have high hopes for this band and future releases from them.
Conclusion
Consisting of just 6 tracks and clocking in at 36 minutes of run time the album is short, sweet and to the point. That being said, it’s one hell of a listen. Melodic riffs, guitar solos, killer lyrics, symphonic keyboards, and snarling vocals, it has everything one could ask for from a debut album.
I highly recommend giving this one a spin.
