Immediately what caught my eye and drew my attention to this release was the album’s beautifully crafted artwork. A stunning black and white painting done by Sans-Visage himself. The overall aesthetic and layout is absolutely amazing and deserves being mentioned.

The album opens with a sprawling and melodic instrumental track. It’s a beautifully written acoustic guitar piece that is quite deceptive of what is to come.

That atmosphere that Sans-Visage manages to craft throughout this album is incredible. It’s a moving, aggressive, melodic and violent masterpiece in of itself. The production of the album is excellent, it’s clear and concise but retains enough of that raw aggression that you’re still aware that it’s a black metal album.

Sans-Visage wears his punk influence on his sleeve. From the vocal style, to some of the guitar riffs, and the drums, it’s quite obvious that punk rock was a heavy inspiration for him as a musician. It’s blended in an interesting and unique way though to form his own brand of black metal, and I must admit it’s excellent.

I, personally, enjoyed the vocals on Jusqu’à Bénitier. The half shouted, half chanted punk-esque vocals in his native French, blend nicely with the more aggressive growls throughout the album. I also thoroughly enjoyed the acoustic passages interlaced throughout the album.

My favorite tracks from the album are “Vautour” and “Le Grand Incendie”. But overall, I feel as though the album is best enjoyed by listening to it as a whole. It’s atmosphere and musicianship make it a worthy listen from start to finish.

Conclusion

Jusqu’à Bénitier is a unique and accomplished piece of black metal. From the album’s beautifully done artwork, the high-quality production, to its stand out blend of punk rock and black metal, this album is absolutely worth a listen. I’d highly recommend it to those looking for something a cut above the rest, and also recommend giving his previous releases a spin as well.
