Introduction
Formed in Turku, Finland in 2023, The Chamberlain are a symphonic black metal band rooted firmly in the traditions of the genre’s late-90s expansion. After establishing their sound with the Dominus Noctis EP (2023), the band quickly positioned themselves within a lineage that values atmosphere, structure, and occult thematic focus over raw abrasion or stylistic experimentation. Draconian Magick (2025) marked their first full-length release, and having somehow overlooked this incredible debut album last year, I felt it deserved a proper review.
The Album:
Draconian Magick is a focused and consistent album that perfectly balances atmosphere and aggression. The guitars rely on steady tremolo picked riffing, creating a melodic but dark foundation that carries the album from start to finish. Keyboards are present throughout, but they are used carefully to support the songs rather than overwhelm them. The production is clean and balanced, maintaining a raw edge, but allowing each instrument to be heard clearly without losing the album’s icy atmosphere.
Tracklisting:
- Overture
- Empyreal Legions
- Wings of Leather
- Draconian Magick
- Interlude
- On the Path of Reckoning
- Rise of the Chamberlain
- Enter the Pandemonium
The tracks “Empyreal Legions” and “Rise of the Chamberlain” highlight the band’s approach to songwriting, favoring tasteful repetition and gradual development over sudden shifts or dramatic climaxes. Riffs often repeat with small variations, giving the music a steady, almost hypnotic flow. The vocals are consistent across the album, delivered in a controlled rasp that fits the music without drawing unnecessary attention to itself. “On the Path of Reckoning” and “Wings of Leather,” showcase the band's ability to balance melody and atmosphere while still maintaining a strong sense of pacing. The drumming is restrained and reliable, focused on maintaining momentum rather than flashy technical skill. Bass lines are subtle but help reinforce the album’s darker atmosphere. The title track, “Draconian Magick,” acts as the album’s centerpiece. It leans heavily on mood and repetition, reinforcing the album’s dark atmosphere and melodic tendencies. Rather than aiming for intensity or speed, the song focuses on immersion, reflecting the band’s overall approach to black metal.
Conclusion
Draconian Magick is a solid and confident debut that stays true to the core elements of symphonic black metal. The Chamberlain do not attempt to push the genre in new directions, but instead focus on strong songwriting, consistent atmosphere, and clear intent. The album’s strength lies in its discipline and cohesion rather than innovation. What they do, they do extremely well. I'm glad I discovered this release when I did, better late than never, and know that fans of symphonic black metal will surely enjoy it as well.
