Introduction
Man, the end of year has left me totally blind sided. Just when you think the year is done for decent releases, you get a slew of stuff all dropping around November and December. By far, one of the standouts for end of year releases has to be the debut release Disglaç from Italian atmospheric black crew Unviar.
Rumination
This debut from Italian black metallers Unviar follows on from their 2023 EP and showcases the bands heavy fast atmospheric black metal, if you’re a fan of stuff like drudkh with more lead-y Finnish parts this is definitely a release for you.
Overall, this release manages to simultaneously be absolutely pummelling throughout while also giving room for space/ambience and slight tinges of weirdness

Beyond that, the whole thing has a really unique spin where it’s atmospheric but also just deeply evil sounding. The opening track Nevere does a good job of highlighting that. The fact it’s a unrelenting assault but goes into these weird half-time hi hat things that could so easily derail the song and turn it sh*t, but this band manages to just write it so well and with such finesse. On the atmospheric side, the track Disglaç manages to have such a unique slowly building minimal sound (it almost sounds more like a 2nd wave version of bosse de nage)
Something about this really ticks a lot of boxes for me and I can’t honestly explain why, I think it’s taking some pretty tried and true sounds and doing them with just enough variation to be sick. Or maybe it's just that the songwriting is so well crafted. I don't know it’s just really f*cking good.
Conclusion
Unviâr has crafted easily one of the most impressive debut LP releases of the year, there isn’t a bad song on this release and every element just works perfectly. I sincerely hope this band gets its due over time because this was easily one of my top 5 albums of the year.
