Introduction

The wonderful Wolfbastard were a new introduction to me last October when they played at A Night of British Black Metal in Edinburgh - and their charmingly humorous lyrics and jovial yet heavy experience made them hard not to enjoy.

Satanic Scum Punks is their latest release, fourth in their delightful discography and one that I was eager to hear in full having experienced some of the songs live last year and with each single in the leadup being thoroughly electrifying.

Satanic Scum Punks

Don’t let the sluggish & doomy atmosphere filled chugs of the first 40 seconds from It’s Fucking Dark fool you, this album quickly changes to a non-stop thrash filled storm of high energy ferocity that begins with a yell of “Fuck off!”.

Their titular track ultimately sums up what you’re going to experience for the full half hour, the blistering blast beats and crust punk paced riffs are a headbangers delight. At four minutes long, some may consider it long-winded in comparison to the rest of the album as well.

Hail Satan Kurwa is absolutely my highlight here, the aggressive punk tone combined with thoroughly tongue in cheek lyrics are on display in full glory in this Polish themed track. When they played it last year the full crowd was chanting the chorus “hail satan kurwa” along and it’s hard not to even as I sit at home writing this review with the cats curiously staring at me. Absolutely a crowd pleaser and I can imagine will be a mainstay in their live sets.

The album isn’t one note however, with the gallop of Blood on Steel being a standout - the rapid tremolo riff intertwined with the power chords makes for a hell of an earworm. Manic Street Creatures takes no prisoners as this fantastically pun-titled song rampages out of the gates and portrays their exhilarating audial violence distilled into a minute and a half worth of madness.

B.I.F.F.O. closes us out and the relentless speed that has filled our ears for the last half hour is abruptly stopped in an anger filled “Fuck off!” which perfectly bookends the album perfectly.

Conclusion

The furious hostility of the eleven tracks is exactly what you’d expect from Wolfbastard, and you’ll know quite quickly if this is your cup of tea or not. If one track doesn’t get you excited, then it’s unlikely any of them will, but on this album they’ve absolutely nailed their aesthetic, beefed it up, and it has become a fine tuned album of delinquent joy.

BMZ Rating: 8.5/10
