On April 11th, 2025 Perseverance Hotel took to hosting a special send-off show for Melbourne folk/black metal outfits Suldusk and Aquilus (supported by the goth folk styling of Plum Green).
Suldusk
Suldusk has been steadily creating a decent sized fan base with their blend of ethereal folk and black metal. From my perspective, the last time I saw them play with Harakiri For The Sky I wasn’t honestly super in to it (maybe just wasn’t in the mood for it that night) but honestly, they’re a great live band. I appreciate how casual they are and how much fun they seem to have with what they do. Beyond that, the sections of their music that hit (blast parts) sound unreal. Overall, a solid watch.
Aquilus
Then next up was the classical black metal sounds of Aquilus. It’s worth noting that both Aquilus/Suldusk share half the same band members (which honestly kudos to them for being able to play that much physically demanding music for almost 2 hours).
Aquilus was more on the heavy and technical side, which I generally appreciate. As it is I’d heard them before on the highly acclaimed Bellum 1&2 releases, but it was cool to finally see it live. Aquilus are a Genuinely impressive band to watch, and their ability to take the dense gothic atmospheres of the album and translate it to live effectively was honestly unreal.
Conclusion
Safe to say, both bands are in great shape leading up to their European tour. The night was full of great music and, as far as shows go, had a solid, relaxed vibe. Shout out to Matt from Black Oceans Media for putting this one together. If you’re in Europe and going to Fortress Festival this year, be sure to catch some of Australia’s finest folk/black metal.
**apologies to Plum green for missing their set, but I heard it was great. **
