Rumination

On this album, Aara presents us with a tale of the treacherous Bernese Eiger mountain, a peak that has claimed the lives of dozens of mountain climbers over the years, as they sought glory through its ascension. The record sets out to accompany the listener on their journey to the top of nature’s deadliest mountain.

The sheer ferocity of this record is palpable; every song is a blast-filled march through frozen hell. The only way I can describe it, in a way that makes sense, is that this sound emanates deep conviction, much like preparing for something as daunting as ascending the mountainside. It’s a soundtrack to the refinement of oneself, and the almost inner sense of grace and stillness that comes from being in absolute war against the elements and pushing forward without looking back.

In terms of production and songwriting, there are zero faults to be found here. Every riff is fucking sick (especially track 2, “Senkrechte Welten”), and the drums sound crushing. By the end of the final track, the mixture of acoustic guitar work and field recordings leaves you with a strong sense of not just triumph through adversity, but mourning for everything you sacrificed along the way.

Conclusion

Overall, on Eiger, Aara has clearly doubled down on what made their previous albums so great, delivering one of the best post-black albums of the past couple of years.

Seriously, don’t miss this one.

BMZ Rating: 9 – Excellent: This is a standout album with superb talent and creativity. It’s impactful, memorable, and likely to be celebrated within the black metal genre.
