Introduction

Belgian black metal band (well it’s a solo project, but okay) Ande released it’s fifth full album on the(31st of January, but to be completely honest, this is the first time that the band appeared on my radar. But that’s one of the joys of listening to music, in my opinion, is the fact that there is an endless stream of new bands and albums to discover.

According to Jim on the Bandcamp page, the project’s name has the following meaning:

The name “Ande” is derived from an archaic Dutch term, embodying profound and primal emotions such as repentance, passion, and anger.

The word Ande and it’s meaning describes black metal perfectly, okay minus the repentance the whole non serviam and such, but you get the point. So let’s see if the name fits the music…

De Schemering van Werelden

Tracklist:

  1. Teer
  2. Van de eeuwen
  3. De schemering
  4. De zonderlingen
  5. De wraak van het bos
  6. Turende schimmen
  7. Vervallen gedaantes

The album title De Schemering van Werelden (which means The Twilight of Worlds in English) fits the music on this album perfectly. It’s a mix of Atmospheric black metal, but there are also some folky influences, which are most present on the 4th song of the album, De Zonderlingen. But more about that song later.

Since Jim does all the writing and instruments himself, I would say good job, throughout the album you’ll find some nicely constructed riffs and the drums sound great also (don’t know whether they are done by a drum machine or not, but if they are, it’s done the proper way).

One of my favorite songs is the 4th track, De Zonderlingen; The rhythm of the drums and the more spoken words that’s being used give for a very pleasant folky song, that sums up the album title pretty well. It really brings you into a Twilight state.

It’s also a great interlude because the 3 songs before it and after it, are much more up-tempo, with some fierce drumming and vocals to match. In summary, it’s a good album and I enjoyed listening too it.

Conclusion

Are you into atmospheric black metal? Then this is the perfect album for you. As said, I was not familiar with the previous albums of the band, but this album I can recommend; it’s a good album, and I’m pretty sure you will enjoy it as well. For all the other black metal lovers, give it a try, and you probably won’t be disappointed.

BMZ rating: 7,5 – Good: A solid and enjoyable album overall. It boasts strong songwriting and performance quality, delivering a cohesive and satisfying listen.
