Introduction

In 2023, a mysterious, anonymous project called Blood Abscission dropped a surprise EP that fucking blew up. Its no-bullshit minimalist edge mixed with massive black metal riffs hit hard. In 2025, Blood Abscission is back with “II” (their first full-length), coming out of the gate with some of the best black metal of the year.

Rumination

On II, Blood Abscission rips through five tracks, forging a cold, dark atmosphere of pummeling, fast-as-hell atmospheric black metal laced with subtle post and symphonic hints. The way this band weaves unique ideas into their sound is unlike anything I’ve ever heard—nobody else is doing this shit. The execution oozes class and polish that’s honestly jaw-dropping.

You could try comparing them to other bands, but 2 stands the fuck alone. The closest I can get is maybe Zero Absolu (who I reviewed earlier this year), taking the bare bones of black metal and twisting it into something deeply unique. What still grabs me, and is sick as fuck, is the whole vibe. There’s no aesthetic bullshit. The artwork’s stark, simple, and gives you nothing to cling to—just a cold, visceral gut-punch.

This album does something rare in black metal: it steps back and says, “We ain’t telling you shit. What does this mean to you? What do you make of it?” A release that hands that kind of power to the listener, while clearly being written by people with some raw feeling or drive who don’t give a fuck if you know the truth behind it. This is refreshing and profound as hell.

Conclusion

So I’ve been flogging this release hard since it came out, and it’s probably tied with Drudkh for AOTY for me. I’m seriously hoping normies don’t find this band and ruin it because fuck it’s so good.

BMZ Rating: 9 – Excellent: This is a standout album with superb talent and creativity. It’s impactful, memorable, and likely to be celebrated within the black metal genre.
