Introduction
Clamosum is a two-piece Melodic/Atmospheric Black Metal act from Tampere, Finland, coming in with their first full-length “Gnosis Absolute”.

Starting with the very atmospheric Deus Adversus, the album sets the tone immediately, bringing that Finnish “melancholy” with the ambiences, contrasting with the vocals that are powerful, yet full of emotion; and about emotion, the instrumental break brings a lot of emotions and sort of contemplation, which is a beautifully composed contrast to the name of the song. The second and title track, Gnosis Absolute, starts with dissonant resounding guitars, to then place a heavier riff above it, then adding another layer of heaviness with the bass, to then bring it all together in a catchy verse. It’s a very synth-heavy song, reminding me of acts like Gehenna in that First Spell album; and still on synths and keyboards, the keyboard solo followed by a bass solo was a very welcome surprise. It’s a short but memorable song, with amazing passages.
Then we get to the third track, Läpi Seitsemän Maailman, which blew me away from the start; a wall of sound with powerful vocals coming right at you, with the mixing being so well done that the ambience and the bass underneath are perfectly listenable. The song ceases the aggression and brings in reflection a few times, be it with more clean-guitar arpeggios or more black metal sections, following the idea of the name of the song, transporting us through all seven worlds. The next track, Toiseuden Pimeälle Alttarille, brings in a slower tempo, dissonance and the vocals mixed in a way they sounded as if they were very close to the listener; a sort of uneasy atmosphere that’s very welcome here. Then we get a very heavy, riffy break that I repeated a few times. Perfectly placed, great ambient created from it right after when the vocals hit with the dissonant notes below then the very prominent piano notes, which once again reminded me of Gehenna.
Then Kohti Yötaivasta comes along, with a beautiful and no other way to describe it but an extremely Finnish intro, with melancholic guitars and ambiences, bass resounding, a very high-pitched melody above all, then when the vocals hit, it's like a beast coming into a space that was, to this point, perfectly peaceful and contemplative. The counterpoint between the vocals and the peaceful instrumentation here is beautiful, which happens all throughout the song, especially when it goes completely silent to bring it back after, and needless to say, this was my favourite song of the entire album, beautifully atmospheric, melodic and aggressive.
The last song, Surujen Siiville, follows the idea: Contemplative intro, even more than the previous song, but with less layers to it. It feels like the song title suggests, a sorrowful moment, which is highlighted even more when the vocals enter and are followed with a voice, a wail, a scream of hopelessness. As the band already made very clear, they are really good alternating between melodies, atmospheres and aggression, more often than not, having two or more of these together. The wails are present in more bits of the song, and the instrumental part with long, repeating clean guitars and bass over a sad ambience was a big highlight for me. The song is a perfect ending to the album, a sorrowful one, but perfectly in tune with what the album proposed.
Conclusion:
For those like me who are fans of more atmospheric stuff, this is a great find. Melodies, ambiences and some raw black metal aggression put together is always welcome, and even more with this distinctive Finnish bittersweetness.
