Introduction
Gaerea, ain’t a new kid on the block. They have been around since 2016, and have released three full albums so far, Unsettling Whispers, Limbo, and Mirage. But for me, they are pretty new. The first time I got any knowledge of them was when they released their third album, Mirage, that’s the one with the golden mask on the front cover. I do remember I liked that album when listening to them, but it’s not something I would set on repeat daily.
But now they are back after 2 years with a brand-new album. I gave it a few good spins and should be ready to share my impressions on it.
Coma
For a change, we start off talking about the artwork because that was one of the first things that drew my attention. The colours and image itself are excellently done, and it just draws in your attention, which to me is the main thing for an album artwork, it doesn’t have any other function besides that. So they are off to a good start.
But a cover is just one part of the album, of course, and not the most important part. Otherwise, we would all just be collection artwork and not listen to music if this was true. So what can you expect with their latest album, Coma;
- The Poet’s Ballet
- Hope Shatters
- Suspended
- World Ablaze
- Coma
- Wilted Flower
- Reborn
- Shapeshifter
- Unknown
- Kingdom of Thorns
Firstly, they have put together a well-made album, it all just oozes quality (just as the artwork), the start of the album has a gripping interlude which draws you in and grabs your attention with some clean vocals, and a very tranquil melody. After around 2.5 minutes, it all starts to unravel and the tempo goes up several notches.
That’s one song down, and there are 9 more to go. This new album contains 10 new songs in total with a runtime of 51 minutes.
Another track on the album that drew my attention was the fifth track, Coma. This one starts off with some intense screams, pulling you back to immersive listening in case you have wondered off. The style of the song reminds me of the band Moonspell, the structure and vocals are somewhat the same. But all in all, it’s a great song.
And that goes for the entire album. All the songs are well put together with great melodies and riffs, the drumming is of excellent quality and so are the vocals. It’s a complete package. And for those that like their previous album, this album won’t disappoint you, I’m sure of that.
Conclusion
After reading this, you would think this album does nothing wrong, and for the most part, you are correct. As previously mentioned, it’s a well-made album, and you just know and hear that a lot of time has gone into it. But ultimately, it’s nothing new, at least not to my ears, and it’s a continuation of the previous album. Which certainly isn’t a bad thing, don’t get me wrong. But rating an album all comes down to opinions and well, we all got one and a lot of the time they are different. However, for me, this was a good album and I enjoyed it. Is it the best I’ve heard this year? No, but that goes for numerous albums, doesn’t mean they are bad. And with that said, it’s time for my rating…
BMZ Rating: 8 – Very Good: An impressive album that rises above many others. It features innovative ideas, captivating lyrics, or excellent musicianship that makes it stand out.
