Mossystone

Introduction

In the absence of a naive joy, we arrive at the dual offerings of an unburdened solitude. This is the basic premise of Jean-Baptiste-Camille Corot’s famous Solitude painting and of the 2026 release "Paysages Tristes" by French Black Metaller Mossystone.

Rumination

For this debut LP, Wilhelm of one man project Mossystone has put together a solidly harsh atmospheric black release consisting of 5 longer tracks (7 minutes+).

Songwriting-wise, it's what you would want from a release like this. Just cold French atmospheric black metal full of blast beats and solid riffs. Everything sounds on point here.

I will give special credit to the main guy Wilhelm's voice on these tracks. It works really well for these songs. Just a very harsh, low growling vibe that reinforces the toughness of what is being proposed here.

In terms of the vibe, it matches the artwork perfectly. Just lonely atmospheric black metal that trudges through the world determined not to be broken by it.

During listening, the phrase ‘pain of truth’ comes to mind a lot when listening to this album. There is a real sense of contentment in this album. It is a very affirming and positive release in its own way. It seems to attest to the facing of realities of the world around us.

Odds are if you’re a black metal fan, you probably spend a fair bit of time alone in your own little world just listening to this stuff isolated from everything. I think this album really captures that part of the human condition in 2026. It's a soundtrack to the same lonely walk through life we all go through once we cast away childish bullsh*t and see the world for what it is. There’s a real no bullsh*t quality to this music that comes out across each song.

Albums like this really are just the best soundtrack for cold winter days when you’re out walking through the world and feeling totally not fucking into it. It reminds you of the quiet place you can find in yourself wherever you go.

Conclusion

Mossystone is sick, and this debut is exactly what you’d hope for something like this. I get the vibe that if this project is already this good it’s probably only going to get better with time. The only debuts i can think of recently that were this good were the debuts from bands like Zorza and Aldheorte. If any of that appeals to you or you’ve just flogged every glaciation album too many times. Check out these guys.
