Introduction
Ultratvmba is a duo from Mexico that is now independently releasing their first EP, Night Worship, which combines thrash and black metal in a late-first-wave kind of way.

The EP starts with a punch to the face with "Night Worship": aggressive, fast, straight to the point, as you’d expect by this mix of subgenres, to then slow down, with chords ringing, some dissonance and the bass complementing things. Also, the ending of this song somehow reminded me of very early Mayhem.
Also, there is something I want to add here that I enjoyed, which is the fact that they mix the language of the lyrics: it’s both in English and Spanish. I legit think it’s a great idea, and keeps that originality factor going for them.
The second song comes along, "A Sacrifice", with a very catchy riff that reminded me of some early thrash bands. The production/mixing also is very nostalgic here too, feels like something out of the mid-late 80s and I would say it was done deliberately, and it works, fits the compositions so well. Again, the mixing of languages is present here, and it makes sense to the composition too. Something that also is a highlight for me here is the buildup to the solo, with a slower sort of arpeggio/tapping that picks up the speed right after, rips everything to shreds and then comes back to the first riff, catchy, simple and functional. Worthy mentioning, Jesús (who does vocals, guitars and bass here) does show he’s a good guitarist all throughout the album, with some great solos and riffs.
As the third song starts, "Darkness Follows", we get a slower tempo riff, with some great drumming underneath. Then the tremolo picking comes along and fills the atmosphere the composition wanted to transmit. Worthy of a mention here too, as I mentioned in the intro, this is a sort of first-wave-ish band. The black metal elements are here, but it feels way more like a thrash metal EP that black metal fans will very much enjoy, like I did. The song is a slower tempo overall, with some interesting echoes/reverbs on the vocals and tremolo riffs and a song that showcases how good Noe is as a drummer. Also, this is my favourite song of the whole EP.
The fourth song, "The Ways Of Decay", comes with faster riffs that almost feel like traditional thrash metal combined with the harsh vocals. This song specifically showcases what I mentioned before on this album feeling like something that was composed mid-to-late eighties. The song shifts tempo a few times, picks up again before delivering the baton to the last song of the EP: Into the Unrealm.
Conclusion
For fans of the thrashy stuff, this sure is a great find. Also on “regional” sorts of ways of composing, this album feels a lot like South American thrash, which is more extreme by default, bringing that sweet blackened extra to make it unique. Definitely worth a listen!
