Fall of Eternity’s Throne

Tracklist:

  1. Raising the Banners of Unsilence
  2. Ó Dorchadas go Lasair
  3. Gaze Upon the Kingdoms of Ash
  4. Breathe Deeply Thy Wraithful Flame
  5. Shattered Steel and a Rose of Red
  6. The Embered King
  7. Gaoil san Oíche
  8. Fall of Eternity’s Throne

The opening track “Raising the Banners of Unsilence” starts setting the mood for what’s to come on this record. Nasty distorted guitars similar to the sound of early Mayhem or Marduk on Frontschwein accompanied by synths that make you hope for a hard — hitting follow up.

Ó Dorchadas go Lasair kicks in as the opening made you hope for. Full speed from the beginning, the same ugly guitars with a thunderous bass beneath and haunting synths before the disgusting vocals kick in. Regarding the vocals, top-notch work there, very reminiscent of Mortuus or Draug from Kirkebrann. Heavy yet sometimes clean enough to understand some words here and there. The bridge in the song lets you catch your breath again for a few seconds, but not long after it’s full blast beating madness once more. In short, this song is what black metal should sound like.

The fifth and longest track, “Shattered Steel and a Rose of Red” sounds pretty romantic with its slow and melodic start. It feels like the ending to a long and hard battle. After two minutes, it’s all over with romance as the harsh reality kicks back in with the brutal vocals and melancholic tinged guitar parts, overall, I think it’s my favourite track of the album. Definitely a very well-structured song that lets you feel victorious yet beaten up after a long, hard fought war.

Conclusion

I started this review without knowing what to expect from this band. I’m a bit biased regarding US black metal often being too polished or too death metal’esque for my liking, but Gallóglaigh really left a mark on me. Furthermore, I can highly recommend checking them out and supporting them if you like. An album and band that should be made aware of in the broader black metal community. For me, it’s certainly on my album of the year list, not on top but undoubtedly in the top 5. My personal score would be a solid 9/10, good job JP.
