Stellar Rot began as a concept to explore the deep lore around the Grimdark universe, pulling imagery from a world tormented by countless horrors from beyond the void and humankind being pushed to the brink after unfathomable atrocities they committed to conquer the stars over the course of several millennia."

Of all the releases I've heard in 2026 so far, “Where the Formless Ones Dwell” stands out as one of the most original and catchy records to grab my attention. I knew this would be a spin that hit the right notes for me, but as I dug into the fine details hidden within the music, I came to really appreciate how well they've blended so many different elements under the black metal umbrella. It has all the rawness, ferocity, and blistering speed you'd expect, but it confidently weaves in modern, post, and atmospheric black metal sounds throughout, never staying in one place too long.
"Through the Eternity Stairs" — is an impressive opener that wastes zero time in getting down to business. Immediately the atmosphere and scope of the record let itself known, and I was grinning the entire time this track evolved—the duo behind it clearly understands the push/pull dynamics of the genre while bringing supreme flavor of their own. At 2:00, the track shifts gears and expands into one of the catchiest lead sections I've heard in recent memory. Perfect pacing, featuring some really unexpected sounds and embellishments, like clean guitar chords with a semi-detuned sounding glissando to kick off the measures during the later anthem. It’s brilliant.
“Behold, The Crimson Path” — launches a torrent of sound, erupting with a triumphant, bright lead melody that gives off epic, fantastical vibes. War drum patterns rattling below it give the range of sound a thunderous dynamic. As this duo has already proven, though, they are masters at executing a complete and complementary tonal shift: the triumphant melodies are obliterated as the track descends into blackened madness—grinding blastbeats, tortured vocal attacks, pure evil. Like the opener, it keeps moving through the full gamut of clean/lead/distorted black metal guitar layering, with masterfully crafted drum grooves keeping things interesting as the whole track builds from light and bright to dark and sinister. It's a journey, and a beautiful piece of music.
"Where the Pestilence Mocks the Mortal" — carries the same ambitious sound. The pacing of it all shifts from more upbeat grooves to devastatingly dark passages carrying impressive drumwork and flow. I found myself struck by just how invested I became in what came next. Cycling through jazzy chops, desolate clean string melodies, and well-placed blastbeat variants, "Pestilence" is packed with flavorful moments and dripping with atmosphere.
"Miasmic Dipsomania" — opens in more familiar territory relative to the rest of the record, though its melodic choices set it apart in just how saturated the epic aesthetic is here. With slamming one-footed blasts and massive orchestral instruments layered in, it struck me as the only semi-straightforward song on display—and that's not a bad thing at all. It's a great complement to the spread, and as a transitional piece leading into the absolute immersion of the closer, it's an important and enjoyable chapter in the tracklist.
“Eternal Rites of the Lost” — Saying they "saved the best for last" would do the rest of this album an injustice given how cohesive it is—but they really pulled off a hell of a closing track here. It feels like a deliberate placement: it drags you through intensely melancholic strings and blistering cymbals, and multiple moments open up into a giant, ominous expanse. I was completely immersed.
Conclusion
At 32 minutes across a seemingly modest five tracks, Where the Formless Ones Dwell is a wholly captivating and transportive musical effort. It's a monumental feat: expertly crafted atmospheric black metal that isn't afraid to branch out into unexpected territory. Stellar Rot has forged a debut that carries with it an immense gravity like a sonic magnetar, it pulled me in, crushed my expectations, and blew me away. “Where the Formless Ones Dwell” launches on September 25th via Hypnotic Dirge Records.
