Between Spotify, YouTube, and Bandcamp, we have access to a virtually limitless library, and while convenience is great, finding the real gems in a sea of endless releases is easier said than done.

The Albums
Burzum - Filosofem (1996)

We start this list out with one that's probably obvious but (in my opinion) probably one of the most important albums when discussing atmospheric black metal. Burzum’s “Filosofem”. Love him or hate him, Varg helped create the blueprint for atmospheric black metal, and dungeon-synth. As well as help introduced Tolkien’s legendarium into the world of black metal. With its abysmal production, droning guitars, and 20 minute long synth interludes, it's a masterpiece and a cornerstone of the genre.
Summoning - Stronghold (1999)

Now that we've discussed a band that helped shape the genre, I want to have a look at a band that has perfected it. One of my all-time favorite bands, Summoning. 1999's "Stronghold" is a shining example of what atmospheric black metal evolved into at the tail end of the second wave. The Austrian duo pioneered the Tolkien black metal subgenre by trading in blast beats for programmed mid-tempo drum marches, massive synth arrangements, and sweeping guitar riffs. All while letting the poems and other collected works of J.R.R Tolkien’s legendarium serve as lyrical inspiration.
Se Lusiferin Kannel - Valtakunta (2017)

Released: October 13th, 2017
Sam: As random as the band name is (translated as That Lusifer's Kannel), Valtakunta brings the suffocating raw atmospheric sound wall to keep you on your toes for 4 songs lasting a bit over an hour. The album starts as prelude to the end of the world as a warning or a celebration and how becomes an annihilating storm to sweep the curse of humanity away and let the Sun's dominion rule over the desolate land.

Isen - Zaklínání poslední zimy (Summoning the Last Winter) (2025)

Anthony: Isens debut "Zaklínání poslední zimy (Summoning the Last Winter)" is the perfect example of an atmospheric black metal record that trades in any vague notions of fantasy realms to depict the reality of a cold, unforgiving land.
This hidden gem of a record is set to stand the test of time as one of the best atmospheric black metal records of recent years.

Born from deep personal grief, Schauer’s "Abschied" elevates atmospheric black metal beyond standard genre tropes. Written during a period of intense loss and professionally mastered by Deep Pressure Studios, the album pairs raw, cathartic emotion with top-tier production. Lyrically, "Abschied" delves into despair, heartache, and the overwhelming atmosphere of a modern world in turmoil.
Selvans - Lupercalia (2015)

Fractal: Selvans has officially retired as a project, but this album above all others is one of the most wicked examples of Atmospheric Folk Black Metal I know of. This was the first release after the death of their drummer Jonny Morelli (RIP 2014) to the year before Lupercalia was unleashed, and the band was a duo by the time this album came out.
The Atmospheric Black Metal components are just as noteworthy in my view. My favorite song, Scurtchìn is like a rollercoaster you might find yourself wanting to ride again and again, especially once you arrive to one of the most original moments of sound fx incorporation that I've ever heard in the entirety of the genre. This album was a master class in innovative experimentation that binds these cohesive compositions in such a way that it really feels like this record takes you places. Lupercalia was pressed in a special A5 digipack twice now, and it's not difficult for me to see why. It's like a locomotive that can't be stopped, no matter how hard the brakes are engaged.
Agalloch - The Mantle (2002)

You can't discuss atmospheric black metal without mentioning Agalloch. Their second full-length album (and another personal favorite of mine), “The Mantle”, remains a quintessential masterpiece of Pacific Northwest atmospheric black metal. Blending icy black metal vocals with intricate neofolk acoustic passages, melancholic doom, and sprawling post-rock arrangements, the album captures the unmistakable sense of bleak winter isolation. It's undoubtedly one of the finest pieces of atmospheric black metal ever put to tape, and helped spawn the entire “Cascadian” Black Metal scene in the United States.
Wolves in the Throne Room - Two Hunters (2007)

Which brings me to my recommendation, Wolves in the Throne Room. Their 2007 album, “Two Hunters”, fundamentally redefined black metal by laying another cornerstone in the Cascadian black metal scene. Moving away from European satanic tropes, corpse paint, and Norwegian blizzards, the Weaver brothers grounded the genre in the damp, moss-laden wilderness, radical environmentalism, and nature-worshipping mysticism of the Pacific Northwest.
What makes “Two Hunters” an absolute masterpiece is its breathtaking dynamic range and emotional weight; recorded analog with producer Randall Dunn, the album builds an immersive wall of sound that feels as vast and untamed as the forests that inspired it.
Drudkh - Autumn Aurora (2004)

Released: February 1, 2004
Few records capture the quiet, ache-inducing transition between decay and dormancy quite like Drudkh’s sophomore triumph, “Autumn Aurora”. Standing as a pillar of Ukrainian atmospheric black metal, the album weaves hypnotic, droning guitars with subtle, melancholic synth lines and crisp acoustic textures that bleed seamlessly into the harshness of the distortion. Few bands capture the essence of Atmospheric Black Metal the way Drudkh does and Autumn Aurora is the perfect starting point to explore one of the greatest atmospheric black metal bands of all time.
Caladan Brood - Echoes of Battle (2013)

Caladan Brood’s 2013 masterwork, "Echoes of Battle", stands as a towering monument in epic atmospheric black metal, effortlessly translating the dense, tragic world of Steven Erikson’s Malazan Book of the Fallen into vast sonic landscapes. Blending heavy tremolo riffs, deep growls, and sweeping dungeon-synth melodies, the record moves with the slow, deliberate weight of marching armies.
