Introduction
Fortress Festival reaches its fifth year in 2027 and is marking it with its biggest step yet: expanding to three days with the addition of "Fortress: First Light", a Friday evening pre-show headlined by Watain in a UK exclusive appearance. The latest announcements bring a new wave of exclusives and debuts to the main weekend including Stormkeep, Mare, Sulphur Aeon and the long-awaited return of Ninkharsag. They join a line-up which is already topped by Emperor. The festival runs from 28-30 of May 2027 at Scarborough Spa.
But it's the Friday that has everyone interested, and for good reason.

Fortress: First Light, Watain's Final Fires
The new pre-show takes over the Grand Hall main stage on Friday 28 of May, and tickets are sold separately from weekend passes. Organisers of the festival describe it as the start of a new chapter for the festival, and they couldn't have picked a heavier name to kick it off with.
Headlining that night are Swedish legends Watain, playing a UK exclusive. Few bands have done more to define the ritualistic and uncompromising side of black metal, and this booking is even more significant given how the band have framed their coming shows. In a statement accompanying the announcement, vocalist Erik Danielsson spoke of a final round of live dates:
"We look forward to setting out on a last round of shows before the end, and to remind people of the powers this music can actually possess when it’s not held back by the laws and sentiments of the modern world.”
Danielsson went on to further describe Watain as a relic of a darker past and invited fans to celebrate the end with the band as they return Watain to its origins. That end has a date: Watain will release their final album on 20 September 2028, their 30th anniversary, after which the band will cease to exist. That makes Scarborough one of the few places left to witness it.
Support on the night comes from Polish act Terrestrial Hospice, who make their UK debut in an exclusive performance, and Blood Countess, from the north of England, who complete the First Light line-up.
"For one last time we will let the ancient fires of real Black Metal and spiritual liberation light up the night."
- Erik Danielsson

New Additions for the Weekend
Moving beyond the Friday, the main weekend line-up has grown a lot. The new names span melodic grandeur, Norwegian orthodoxy, cosmic death metal, and a run of atmospheric debuts.
Melodic and Symphonic
Stormkeep make a trip all the way from Denver, Colorado to headline the Saturday night. It's their first visit to Europe in four years. The band promise a set drawn from across their catalogue, including songs never played in the UK, framed as a journey through their history.
Nidrosian Black Metal
Norway's Mare bring the dense, ritualistic sound of the Trondheim scene to Scarborough in a UK exclusive. For those following the Nidrosian movement, this is a rare chance to see a key name in Britain.
Blackened Death Metal
Sulphur Aeon add some Lovecraftian weight to the line-up with an exclusive UK appearance. Their mix of cosmic horror and crushing death metal makes them one of the heavier bands on a black-metal-led line-up.
The Return
British black metal act Ninkharsag return after two years of silence for an exclusive set. Better yet, the band say a new full-length is already taking shape:
"Every hibernation must end, and ours is over."

Atmospheric Debuts
This wave of announcements has a strong lean towards atmospheric black metal, with three acts making their first UK appearances:
- Silver Knife (Belgium): a selective band when it comes to live performances that they play, they have chosen Fortress for their UK debut and promise brand-new material on the night.
- Oerheks (Belgium): after a handful of shows in Belgium, the Netherlands and Germany, the project brings its atmosphere to the UK for the first time.
- Bloodbark: travelling for their first-ever UK performance in an exclusive set.
Final Additions
- Ultha (Germany): festival favourites return for a special UK exclusive on the Grand Hall main stage.
- Perchta (Austria): finally make their UK debut after having to withdraw from the 2025 edition.
- Firtan (Germany): open the Grand Hall on Saturday with a UK exclusive.
- Blood Countess (UK): supporting Watain and Terrestrial Hospice on Fortress: First Light.
Already on the Line-up
This latest wave of announcements joins a line-up that was already one of the strongest of Fortress's five years. At the top sit Norwegian legends Emperor, closing the Sunday with a UK exclusive headline.
What really stands out is how many of these sets can't be seen anywhere else: Worldwide Exclusives and Debuts:
- Gris (Canada): a worldwide live debut from the cult Québécois act, whose fans never expected to see them on a stage.
- Gràb (Germany): a worldwide exclusive.
Special Sets
UK exclusives:
- Slagmaur (Norway)
- Havukruunu (Finland)
- Sinmara (Iceland)
UK Debuts:
- Miserere Luminis (Canada)
- Tardigrada (Switzerland)
- Mourir (France)
- Trha (USA)
With a Québécois angle includes Gris, Forteresse and Miserere Luminis, a debut from Gris alone would have made this a great edition. Add the rest, and Fortress 2027 is shaping up as the UK black metal event of the year.
The Dungeon Synth Stage
One of the things that sets Fortress apart from other festivals is its dedicated dungeon synth stage in the Spa's theatre room. The genre began as an offshoot of black metal's ambient side and is rarely performed live. This year's line-up for the stage includes several live debuts that fans of the scene have waited a long time for.
The latest addition is Swedish Örnatorpet, playing a UK exclusive. Live appearances from the project are rare, and Örnatorpet says Fortress feels like exactly the kind of place where this music belongs.
They join an already strong theatre bill
Live Debuts:
- Erang (France): a worldwide live debut.
- Spectral Castle (France): first ever live performance for the project.
UK Debuts and Exclusives:
- Wraith Knight (USA): OldNick’s medieval-inspired project crosses the Atlantic for a UK debut and exclusive.
- Örnatorpet (Sweden): UK exclusive
Also appearing:
- Hole Dweller (USA)
- Atlantean Sword
- Lord Bakartia (Spain)
- DragonKeep (France)
- Dungeontroll: a worldwide exclusive set created especially for Fortress.
- Frostgard: the Tolkien-inspired dark elf project completes the stage.
With two live debuts on one stage, this could be just as much of a draw as the Grand Hall for some. If you've never caught dungeon synth live, this is about as good an introduction as you'll get.

Why Fortress 2027 Is the One to Make
Five years in, Fortress has become an essential part of the UK extreme music scene. That's not only due to the size of the line-up but because so much of it cannot be seen anywhere else. Worldwide debuts, full album sets and bands that rarely leave their own countries are what it does best, and 2027 is its strongest year yet.
With Watain’s end now set for September 2028, their 30th anniversary, First Light may be one of the last times they play in the UK. Alongside Emperor headlining, Gris finally playing live, and Erang's debut on the theatre stage, this weekend could be the weekend people talk about for years to come.
